Introduction

Operation Theatre Technology is a technical and detailed occupation in the realm of  health science. A specific technical vocation in the realm of health science is Operation Theatre Technology. These individuals are a critical part of the operation unit team, as they collaborate with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurses to offer excellent patient care during the procedure. They ensure that every procedure performed in the operating room is as safe as possible. Various equipment, anaesthetic, and instruments are used during a surgery. An operation theatre technician is trained to operate this equipment, organise surgical tools, provide a suitable quantity of anaesthesia, and help the surgeon or doctor doing the procedure. Alongside medical and nursing colleagues, Operation Theater Technologists provide high-quality patient care and expert assistance during the anesthetic, surgical and recovery phases of peri-operative period. The function of the OTT requires applying theory to practise in a variety of clinical settings. The students will be involved in the assessment, implementation, and evaluation of perioperative care, which is separated into three phases that are all interlinked. These phases being the anaesthesia phase, surgical phase, and recovery phase. The OTT is, therefore, required to have a broad knowledge and skill base, in addition to management and communication skills.

Scope of OTT

Operation theatre technologists are allied healthcare professionals and the demand of OT technologists is high in Pakistan. They play an integral part in the smooth functioning of ICUs, CCUs and Operation theatres in hospitals and clinics. Emergency centres and private laboratories are known to recruit operation theatre technicians. After higher studies, one may also don the role of an instructor or teacher at relevant training institutes.

Nature of work

• Operation theater technologist may perform the following tasks:
• transport patients to and from the theater and wards
• assist in preparing operating rooms for surgery
• set up, check, connect and adjust surgical equipment
• provide technical assistance to surgeons, surgical nurses and anesthetists
• clean and restock the operating room, arranging instruments, supplies and equipment according to instruction
• position patients for surgical and anaesthetic treatments

Operating theatre technologists usually work closely within a team in a restricted physical environment

How to become an Operation Theatre Technologist

To become an OT technologist you can choose to pursue a diploma after passing Matric. Another path that you can follow is going for a bachelor’s degree in OTT after getting done with intermediate.  Eligibility criteria is 50% marks or above in pre-medical in Fsc.
