Sociology

Introduction

The study of the structure of society and its enduring patterns of social relations is sociology’s primary mission. Sociology studies human conduct from the perspective of the history and the anatomy or structure of the groups. It focuses on how people coordinate their activities to reach individual and collective goals through the development of roles, meanings, and norms that make behavior reciprocally predictable and organized. Sociology investigates questions such as how such patterns of interdependent activity originate and what sustains them, why they take one shape instead of another, how some societies change more rapidly than others, how groups are related to each other, and how people justify and explain what they are doing. The patterns are learned as customary behavior and institutional practices.

The sociological perspective is closely linked to comparative historical and cross-cultural studies of social institutions and to psychological studies of human interaction in a wide range of social, economic, educational, religious, familial, and political settings.

Scope of Sociology

Sociologists are leading the way in this effort as the Pakistani society has grown more susceptible to a variety of social issues for which social scientists are developing the necessary scientific tools to address the social pathologies. However, over the past 20 years, academia and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) have put in a lot of effort and brainstorming for the relief of social issues and improvement of the socio-economic standing of the general public. This endeavor combines theory and application, and sociology as a discipline excels at both.

To fill the gap in Pakistani society and develop social policies to address current issues, there is an urgent need for such qualified social scientists and sociologists.

Graduates of sociology programs take part in initiatives that aim to promote national development. Sociology graduates are actively involved in community development, rural development, population planning, social mobilization, and rural health programs. The Department’s training program prepares its students to make valuable contributions to the nation’s development.

Additionally, the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) and the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) periodically invite graduates to apply for positions as lecturers, supervisors, and social welfare officers across the nation.

Nature of work

Sociologists typically do the following:

  • Create research initiatives to test social issue theories.
  • Gather information using surveys, observations, interviews, and other methods.
  • Analyze data and draw conclusions.
  • Prepare summaries of their research findings in reports, articles, or presentations.
  • Discuss research findings and sociological issues with other social scientists, policymakers, or other groups.
  • Consult and advise clients, decision-makers, or other groups on sociological issues and research findings
